The Mary Morrisson Dancers are pleased to premier "Swinging Kilts - A Year in Scottish Dance and Celebration" at the Poet's Den, showcasing the variety of Scottish dance - traditional Highland, National, Country, and Hardshoe - from the ancient Highland Fling to ceilidh dances and modern creations new-grown from traditional roots.

Let us take you through a calendar of Scottish celebration, dancing the New Year in, visiting a summer Highland Games, an eerie Halloween, and maybe even a winter wedding. Woven through with the poetry of Robert Burns, Scotland's immortal bard, and accompanied by live fiddle, piano, dulcimer, and bagpipes, "Swinging Kilts" will carry you away to a country of misty glens, lilting melodies, and irrepressible spirit.

The Poet's Den Theatre is located between 1st and 2nd Avenues. The #6 subway at 110th Street and 3rd Avenue is just three blocks from the theatre. Or, take the M15 bus on 1st or 2nd Avenue to 108th Street stop.

The Poet's Den Theatre
Poet's Den, the jewel of East 108th Street, was established in 2001. The theater is dedicated to the creation and presentation of performance art of every variety. In October and November 2003, Poet's Den presented violinist Dale Stuckenbruck and pianist Heawon Kim in "Courtly Performances", a classical duet of music of the Nineteenth Century court, set in a European aristocratic salon. Last spring, Poet's Den premiered the first Traditional Dance Series, featuring the traditional music and dances of Spain, India, Japan, the Middle East, Korea and the Philippines.

The Mary Morrisson Dancers
We are a small group of Scottish dancers in New York City who love the traditional dances of Scotland. Join us to learn traditional Scottish dances (from Step, Highland, National, Country, Ceilidh to Cape Breton) or to play traditional Scottish music for class and demonstration.
Our founder and director, Mary Morrisson Abdill, has been performing Scottish dance for over three decades, and has a full teaching certificate from the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society. She has been playing Scottish music for over a decade, and is a strong proponent of live music for dancing.
We perform Scottish dances in authentic, native costume at Scottish events, Celtic and Renaissance festivals, weddings and other events and celebrations. Our performances can include a wide spectrum of Scottish dance styles, traditional music, Gaelic lessons, songs, Robert Burns poetry, history, and stories. If desired, we provide participatory workshops with our demonstrations. A ceilidh band and dance callers are available for more energetic groups.
